As you align your smile, you might notice bad breath from time to time. This is normal because food particles and plaque tend to get stuck in the spaces between your teeth and appliance. When they are stuck for a long period of time, they put off a foul-smelling odor, resulting in bad breath.

To help you eliminate bad breath, our Creekside Dental orthodontic team encourages you to do the following things:

-Brush your teeth: It is highly recommended to brush your teeth after each meal and snack. This will help you remove the food particles that stick to your appliance and give you bad breath. It’s easier to carry a small, travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste around with you so you can brush when you need to. After you’re done brushing, scrub your tongue to wash away the smelly bacteria that reside there.

-Floss your smile: Flossing will also help with the bad breath because it will remove the food particles your toothbrush couldn’t reach. So, make sure you floss after you brush and you are gentle around the gumline as you do so.

-Use mouthwash: Mouthwash will clean your smile and kill the bacteria that are causing the bad breath. Try rinsing at least once a day with a beneficial mouthwash that your dentist or orthodontist recommends.

If you brush, floss, and rinse frequently, you can have the fresh breath you are looking for.
