If you’re ready to take your dental hygiene to the next level, then it’s time to start using mouthwash. Mouthwashes, which are sometimes referred to as oral rinses or mouth rinses, are liquid products used for washing the mouth, typically through gargling or swishing. Rinsing with mouthwash will help you keep your mouth clean and your teeth healthy.

Removing plaque from your teeth daily is an essential part of a good hygiene routine. When plaque remains on teeth too long, it can form tartar, which eventually leads to gum disease. Rinsing with a mouthwash solution, in addition to brushing your teeth and flossing, can help you keep your mouth clean and healthy.

While some mouthwashes only freshen your breath, many mouthwashes are made to destroy the harmful bacteria in your mouth and freshen your breath. The bacteria-killing kind of mouthwash will usually have the word “antiseptic” printed on the label and are referred to as therapeutic mouthwashes. Mouthwashes that solely freshen breath are cosmetic mouthwashes. Therapeutic mouthwash solutions often contain compounds that serve positive side effects such as teeth whitening and cavity control. Some mouthwashes treat dry mouth, fungal growth, and inflammation.

Rinsing with mouthwash might be especially useful for you depending on your existing dental hygiene habits. If you have a hard time brushing and flossing your teeth as much as you’d like to, using mouthwash daily can be a great baseline goal — though of course we still recommend doing your best to brush and floss daily in addition to rinsing with mouthwash!
