How to Have a Healthy Halloween

Halloween is right around the corner, which means your children will be visiting every house in the neighborhood, filling their trick-or-treating bags with candy. For most parents, this is a scary thought—not only because of the sugar rush your child is about to have, but also because of the many cavities the candy might cause.

So, to help you help your child have a smile-healthy Halloween, our Creekside Dental team has some tips for you. Those tips are:

-Encourage your child to avoid hard, sticky candies that stay in the mouth for a long period of time. If the candy is left in the mouth, your child is more prone to tooth decay.

-Have your child eat their candy with or shortly after a meal. The saliva produced while eating the meal will help cancel out the acids produced by the bacteria in the mouth.

-Strengthen your child’s teeth with fluoride. Have them drink fluoridated water and brush with fluoride toothpaste.

-Keep your child’s smile clean with a consistent oral hygiene routine. Make sure they brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and floss at least once a day with an easy-to-use product.

-Encourage your child to chew sugarless gum that has the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance. The saliva produced while chewing will help wash away the candy particles and neutralize the acid in the mouth.
