How to Care for Your Dental Filling

Posted .

If you have a cavity, our dentists may recommend a dental filling in Yakima, Washington. To treat your tooth, Drs. Packard and Packard will remove the decayed part of the tooth and fill the area with the dental filling material. A dental filling may also be used to repair cracked, chipped, worn down, or broken teeth. At Creekside Dental, our dentists are pleased to offer both composite and amalgam fillings for your dental restoration.

How Is a Dental Filling Placed?
Before placing a dental filling, our dentists will numb the area around the tooth to ensure your comfort. Using a drill or an air abrasion instrument, the tooth decay will be removed. The area will then be tested and probed to make sure that all of the decay has been successfully removed. Then the area will be cleaned of bacteria and debris. Depending on the filling material chosen, we will then place your dental filling in layers. For the composite resin, a curing light will be used to harden each layer as it is placed. Once all of the layers are in place, we will shape, trim, and polish the material.

How Do I Care for My Dental Filling?
To care for your dental filling, practice proper oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice daily and floss at least once daily. Make sure to visit our dentists regularly for your dental cleanings and exams. If our dentists think that your filling may be cracked or leaking, they will take X-rays to get a closer look. The dental filling can be replaced if it becomes compromised. If the tooth with a dental filling becomes very sensitive, if you notice a crack in the filling, if a piece of the filling is missing, or if you notice a sharp edge, contact Creekside Dental for an appointment.
